WELCOME
TO OUR IMPACT REPORT

In 2024, Dialogue Impact continued its mission to strengthen social cohesion in a world marked by uncertainty and change. More than 35 years have passed since Andreas Heinecke began this Dialogue in darkness, inspired by a simple but profound question:

How can people so close become so divided?

Across 27 Dialogue Hubs in 21 countries, our teams create spaces where people meet beyond difference, challenge assumptions and build new forms of understanding. Guided by Martin Buber’s insight that “the only way to learn is grounded in encounter”, our work has grown from darkness to silence, to ageing, to end-of-life conversations, and to inclusive employment.

This report highlights the reach of our global network, the experiences that shaped our year, and the collective impact made possible by our partners, guides, and communities. As we look ahead, we remain committed to fostering empathy, inclusion, and meaningful connection worldwide.

SHAPING TOMORROW
A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

Portrait picture Svenja Weber, CEO of Dialogue Impact.

2024 reminded us that social cohesion can no longer be taken for granted. As the way we live, work, and share responsibility continues to evolve, our mission remains clear: creating spaces where people meet, listen, and understand one another.

Our global network is our greatest strength. Across 27 Dialogue Hubs in 21 countries, partners bring a shared vision to life through locally rooted experiences. From Hamburg to Singapore, Monterrey to Cairo, and Buenos Aires to Melbourne, they demonstrate inclusion in action – fostering connection, shifting perspectives and removing barriers. Our social franchise model links global learning with local impact and thrives on collaboration.

This year, we asked how global and local cooperation can generate maximum impact while remaining future-ready. Amid ongoing transformation, 2024 marked a step toward redefining our role as a learning organisation – one that reflects, adapts and moves forward guided by empathy, inclusion and impact.

It was also a year of structural renewal. We sharpened focus areas, realigned processes and prepared succession to ensure long-term resilience.

My gratitude goes to our teams, guides, partners and visitors. Your commitment makes meaningful impact possible. Let us continue building together – globally connected, locally rooted and courageous in shaping the future.

Svenja Weber, CEO of Dialogue Impact

WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO
AT DIALOGUE IMPACT

We believe in the untapped potential of empathy, inclusion and human connection to strengthen a society that works for all.

OUR APPROACH

Dialogue Impact creates learning environments that touch people, move them, and inspire meaningful reflection. At the core of our methodology is a simple idea: when people step outside their habitual ways of perceiving the world, they become more open to empathy, connection, and change.

Our approach combines three interconnected pillars:

EXPERIENCE

Immersive Experiences
Building Empathy

Through Dialogue in the Dark®, Dialogue in Silence® and Dialogue with Time®, visitors enter unfamiliar sensory worlds guided by experts with lived experience.

These encounters challenge assumptions, shift perspectives and open space for understanding and human connection.

REFLECT

Interactive Exhibitions for Social Emotional Learning

Our reflective formats such as the Inclusion Studio deepen awareness and create hands-on learning moments.

Visitors explore themes like accessibility, identity, technology and belonging, discovering values such as creativity, resilience, and empathy.

GROW

A Laboratory
Building Capacity

Through B2B, B2C, and pedagogical workshops, we translate experience into practical skills.

Participants strengthen communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and inclusive leadership. Co-creative workshops introduce real-world accessibility challenges and empower people to design solutions together.

Across all pillars, our mission remains constant:

to create spaces where people connect beyond difference, reflect on themselves and others, and grow the capacities needed for a more inclusive society.

OUR VALUE CHAIN

Our value chain outlines how Dialogue creates measurable social value – from delivering learning experiences to enabling long-term behavioural and systemic change. Each stage is concise, fact-based and aligned with international impact reporting standards.

OUTPUT

Experiences That Build Connection and Learning

Across 27 locations worldwide, Dialogue in the Dark, Dialogue in Silence and Dialogue with Time provide structured exhibition tours and workshop experiences. In 2024, our programmes reached nearly 500,000 visitors and participants through guided exhibitions and educational workshops.

OUTCOME

Transformative Encounters That Empower

Our experiences foster increased empathy and perspective-taking, disrupt stereotypes and spark positive emotional engagement such as curiosity, gratitude and openness. They strengthen communication across social and cultural barriers and create meaningful employment and professional empowerment for people with visual, hearing or age-related disabilities.

IMPACT

People Driving Change in Their Worlds

General public: Dialogue experiences inspire greater openness toward disability and spark meaningful conversations at home. Education sector: Schools and universities use Dialogue to strengthen inclusive attitudes in teaching and learning. Business and workplaces: Companies apply our insights to improve accessibility, inclusive leadership, and diversity-sensitive communication. Social, medical, and care professions: Professionals report heightened empathy that leads to more respectful interaction and better quality of care. Design, architecture, and planning: Designers and planners gain motivation to embed accessibility and universal design more consistently.

WHAT WE DO
OUR CORE EXPERIENCES

At the heart of Dialogue Impact are three core experiences that challenge assumptions, shift perspectives, and create meaningful human connection.

Each format opens a different doorway into understanding – through darkness, through silence, or through time. Together, they form the foundation of our work: experiential encounters that move people beyond difference and inspire more inclusive ways of seeing, hearing, and relating to one another.

DARKNESS OPENS HEARTS

Empowerment Through Employment

All my life, my family never asked what it was like to be blind. When I became a guide at Dialogue in the Dark, I finally found a way to show them. During a tour with my uncles, they experienced my world, trusted me to lead, and began asking the questions they had avoided for years. In that moment, I felt truly seen — and something inside me changed.

SEEING WITH THE HEART

Education for Empathy

A first-grade boy wrote an award-winning essay after visiting Dialogue in the Dark Takeshiba. Guided by Nagi-san, he explored darkness, played catch, and tasted dumplings “even better than when I could see.” He wrote, “I felt incredibly safe.” His reflection showed how one experience can reshape how children understand disability and inclusion.

GUIDING WITH MEANING

Empowerment Through Employment

Blind since birth, Adelyn Koh joined Dialogue in the Dark Singapore in 2023, bringing warmth and positivity to every tour. Her connection to Dialogue began as a student, when a visit helped her classmates finally understand her world and relate to her with empathy. That experience shaped her path. Now a guide and musician, she shares that same transformative understanding with others.

FROM FEAR TO HOPE

Visitors Who Leave Seeing Differently

A family visited Dialogue in the Dark after their 10-year-old son was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa. We arranged a private tour with a guide who also has RP. What they expected to be difficult became a joyful experience. The boy bonded with his guide, calling him “the coolest person I’ve ever met”, and the family asked to stay in touch. FROM DARKNESS TO ASPIRATION

Education for Empathy

A young girl visited our exhibition and, after overcoming her initial fear, followed the guide’s confident voice through the darkness. When she learned the guide was blind, she ran to her mother and said, “Mom, when I grow up, I want to be blind!” Her innocent admiration revealed how Dialogue transforms fear into fascination and inspires new ways of seeing difference.

DIALOGUE ANNIVERSARIES
TIME TO CELEBRATE

Our long-lasting impact – built over 35 years, millions of visitors, and thousands of jobs for people with disability and older adults – is possible thanks to our partners and their unwavering commitment.

They bring the Dialogue model to life in their cities and communities, expanding our mission and vision locally every day. This year, we proudly celebrate three Dialogue venues marking one or two decades of multiplying dialogue and creating meaningful change. Congratulations!

SILVER JUBILEE AT DIALOGUE IN THE DARK JAPAN

For 25 years, Dialogue in the Dark® Japan has been shaped by the vision and perseverance of Shinsuke and Kiyoe Shimura. Inspired by a small article about Dialogue in the Dark® in Europe, Shinsuke traveled abroad to experience it first-hand – an encounter that sparked the founding of Dialogue in Japan.

Through decades of creativity, innovation, and resilience amid continous change, Japan has become one of the few partners worldwide to host all three exhibitions: Dialogue in the Dark®, Dialogue in Silence®, and Dialogue with Time®. Today, it stands as a trusted and inspiring reference within our global network.

Pepe Macías

Director of Dialogue in the Dark Monterrey

This year marks 10 years since I began leading Dialogue in the Dark® Monterrey, and my mission remains unchanged: to offer others with visual disability the same opportunity that transformed my own life as a person who lives with disability.

Through Dialogue in the Dark®, I developed essential social and professional skills – decision-making, listening, empathy, public speaking, and facilitation. It shaped my path as an organizational psychologist, coach, and entrepreneur, and it has allowed me to provide a dignified life for my family.

That is the power of Dialogue in the Dark®. And it is that same power that I strive to pass on to every member of my team, every day.

10 YEARS DIALOGUE IN THE DARK KUALA LUMPUR

The journey of Dialogue in the Dark® Malaysia has been marked by resilience, community, and unwavering belief in our mission. Despite a three-year closure during Covid, we were able to rise again thanks to Dialogue Impact’s steadfast support and the extraordinary generosity of more than 40 angel investors who contributed 80,000 € to help us rebuild through a small studio.

Our former full-time team members with visual disability now collaborate part-time, and we remain optimistic that this is only a temporary pause. Our dream is alive: to relaunch Dialogue in the Dark®, Dialogue in Silence® and Dialogue with Time® – and one day bring World of Dialogue to Malaysia. Our hope continues to guide us forward.
